Rebel Ranis
Kaikeyi, Draupadi, Karaikal Ammaiyar, and Sita gather across time to tell their untold stories.
Each voice speaks of body and agency, of shame turned into revelation. Kaikeyi grapples with maternity and the loss of her political self. Draupadi revisits her assault as awakening. Karaikal Ammaiyar defies body image and beauty to find freedom in formlessness. And Sita, from the Adbhuta Ramayana, rises as the energy of mother earth who reclaims her own fire.
Rebel Ranis is a series of embodied confessions inspired by the writing of Eve Ensler. This production combines Bharatanatyam, contemporary dance, theatre and live Tamil jazz music bringing forth the stories of four voices through memory and movement.
This production was originally funded by a grant provided by UNM Foundation.
